Every year vet bills get more expensive. And because there is no national health
service for pets, you must pay for the vet bills yourself. Pet insurance gives you
peace of mind by ensuring that you can take care of the health needs of your dog or cat.
Types of pet insurance:
This type of policy is designed for pet owners concerned about their pet developing a long-term,
chronic or recurring illness. As long as the policy is renewed every year, your pet will be covered
for illnesses that arose after the original policy was purchased. The policy will cover a set amount of
money each year. Once that amount is reached, you must wait until the next year to began getting money back again.
In our opinion, lifetime cover is the best option because it provides the most complete protection for your pet. Lifetime is almost
always the most expensive option, but in our opinion it is worth it.
This type of policy is also known as a maximum benefit policy. The policy will cover a set amount of money
for a condition (e.g., diabetes), but after that amount is reached, you will never recieve money for that condition again.
There is no time limit on reaching the maximum amount (as long as your policy is in effect.)
This type of policy is similar to the per condition policy above, but in addition to having a set amount of money
available for the condition, it only provides cover for a year after the onset of the condition.
So if your pet gets diabetes, this type of policy will cover up to the policy money limit or 12 months of treatment - whichever
comes first. After that time, you will not be allowed to claim on the policy.
This type of policy only covers accidents, not illnesses. This cover is usually very cheap, but in our opinion, does not provide
adequate protection for most pets.
In addition to vet bills, most pet insurance will provide cover for a variety of problems:
advertising/reward for lost pets, third party liability, holiday cancellation, boarding fees
and death benefits.
